Having the golfing shoes can increase your confidence and boost your game. The shoes are comfortable, flexible and provide more leg support. However, as time goes by, you will notice that your pair will start to wear out, strip, catch dust and rust regardless of how well you take care of them. All these factors are responsible for making it difficult to remove the spikes when need be. In this article, I share with you some tips on how to remove stuck spikes from your golf shoes.

To remove stuck spikes from your golf shoes successfully, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • Golf spike wrench
  • WD-40
  • Cleaning brush
  • Needle-nose pliers

When removing stuck spikes from your golf shoe, the first step is to clean any loose dirt. First, start by clapping your pair of golf shoes together. This will shake off some loose dirt and debris leaving you with less to deal with. Use the cleaning brush and soapy water to wash clean the remaining dirt and debris from the soles of your shoes. This is important as it not only cleans your surface but also gives you a clear view of the spikes that needs to be removed.

Step 2: Spray the Stuck Spike with WD-40

After cleaning the under sides of your shoes, the next step is to spray the area with WD-40. Get the spray to cover the regions around the affected spikes. If you can get the spray to spread to the threads, you will stand a chance of removing the spikes quicker and more effectively.

Step: Remove the Stuck Spikes Using the Wrench

With your golf spike wrench, remove the stuck spikes. In case the golf spike wrench fails to work, use the needle-nose pliers to grip and turn the spikes anticlockwise until they are out. If the pliers lose their grip, repeat the procedure until you are successful.

This method is not very much different from the one above. However, there are slight variations that may help you remove overly stuck spikes from your golf shoes so it is worth considering as well.

  • Golf spike wrench
  • Penetrating oil
  • Cleaning brush
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Dry towel

Removing the excess dirt from your shoes before removing the stuck spikes will allow you to work properly and remove the spikes quickly. Use the cleaning brush to clean the undersides of your shoes and wipe them clean.
After removing all the loose dirt, place a dry towel on a work surface and set the golf shoe on while making sure that the spikes face up.

Step 2: Spray the Penetrating Oil

Penetrating oil is one of the best lubricants especially when it comes to removal of stuck spikes. Carefully spray the oil on the stuck spikes that you want removed while taking keen interest on the receptacle as well. However, you should be keen not to overspray the oil as that may make the situation more complicated. Extra pooling of penetrating oil will give you extra cleaning task and may lead to the spikes sliding while turning them.

Step 3: Remove the Stuck Spikes

Place your spike wrench on the stuck spike and start twisting both clockwise and counterclockwise until it is loose. Use a pair of pliers to remove the loosend spike and then move on to the next.

However, if the stuck spike does not get loose after using a spike wrench, use a drill to drill a shallow hole in the center of the stuck spike. Take care not to drill into the bottom of the sole of your golf shoes. Use your needle nose pliers to get through the drilled hole and remove the stuck spike. It is important to note that utmost care is needed at this stage to avoid further damages to your shoes.

Even though replacing the spikes of your golf shoes is not something that you would rather be doing, it is still an important activity especially if you want your shoes to last for long. Here are some of the benefits of changing the spikes of your golf shoes regularly:
